Sophos joins ICAP Forum to incorporate virus scanning into groundbreaking new protocol

Sophos, the world-leader in corporate anti-virus solutions, has announced that it has joined the Internet Content Adaptation Protocol (ICAP) Forum, a workgroup dedicated to the development of a groundbreaking new internet e-services standard. Sophos will provide its expertise to work on integrating virus scanning into this new internet infrastructure protocol.

The ICAP Forum is addressing the need for a defined way for network-based applications to communicate with edge devices such as caching and content delivery systems. The developing open protocol will allow enterprises, content providers and ISPs to seamlessly conduct e-services such as virus scanning, language translation and content filtering from any internet access device.

"As Europe's leading anti-virus developer, Sophos has considerable experience in working with ISPs and ASPs to integrate anti-virus technology into their systems," said Graham Cluley, head of corporate communications for Sophos Anti-Virus. "Sophos is pleased to endorse the ICAP standard as it will further enable ISPs to offer their customers the world's best virus protection."

Sophos is developing the protocol with other members of the ICAP forum, including Akamai, Cobalt Networks, Direct Hit, Google, InfoLibria, Network Appliance, Novell, Oracle, Secure Computing, and Vignette.

Many of the world's leading businesses, ISPs and ASPs already use Sophos Anti-Virus Interface (SAVI) technology to combine Sophos's anti-virus capabilities with firewalls, email servers, encryption devices and other security-related devices.
