Veteran Lotus Executive To Drive Growth At Sophos

Anti-Virus Leader Names David Hughes As President Of US Operations

Wakefield, MA - Sophos, Inc., one of the world's leaders in corporate virus protection, today announced the appointment of David Hughes, formerly vice president of strategy at the Lotus division of the IBM Corporation (NYSE:IBM), to the presidential post at Sophos, Inc. Hughes assumes his role this week.

In his 12 years at Lotus, Hughes held various positions in sales management, marketing and strategy, with extensive experience in launching new products, developing and managing indirect sales channels, and leading high performance teams.

"North America plays a key role in Sophos' worldwide expansion strategy," said Peter Lammer, Sophos's chief executive officer. "This year we began the search for a top US software executive to leverage further the impact our world-class product and service are already making in the corporate American anti-virus market. In David Hughes we have now found a highly able and experienced leader to drive our US operation forward through significant further growth."

Hughes was often involved at the forefront of change at Lotus. He was instrumental in the implementation of a direct sales model for Notes, as well as in the shift to a leveraged go-to-market model based on business partners. He played an important role in defining the initial sales integration strategy after Lotus was acquired by IBM in 1995, and in the crucial decision to pursue a share acquisition strategy for Notes and Domino. In 1997, Hughes led a project that redefined the company's strategic vision and identity.

"What first attracted me to Sophos was the company's history of leadership in this fast-moving field," said David Hughes, president of Sophos Inc. "I am impressed by the quality of the company's products and support as well as its loyal customer base, which provide a great foundation for rapid growth. I am thrilled to be joining the Sophos team as company growth accelerates worldwide."

Prior to Lotus, Hughes held senior positions in general management, sales and strategic alliances for two software companies in the computer-aided software engineering (CASE) market. He holds degrees from Harvard and Stanford and also served as an officer in the United States Navy.

The former president of Sophos, Inc., Richard Jacobs, has been promoted to the company's technical director and has joined the board of directors. Jan Hruska, formerly technical director, and Peter Lammer, formerly managing director, will take on the role of chief executive officers.
