Sophos Anti-Virus chosen to safeguard Universiti Malaya's computing systems.

Deal marks Sophos's successful penetration into the education sector

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - Sophos, a world leader in corporate anti-virus protection, today announced that its anti-virus software has been selected by Universiti Malaya to protect its enterprise network against viruses, worms and Trojans.

The news comes hot on the heels of Sophos's appointment of five new business partners in Malaysia to help achieve penetration into the burgeoning computer security market there.

"This deal marks a significant milestone for Sophos," said Dr Jan Hruska, joint founder and CEO of Sophos. "The education sector is an important market for us. We are delighted that Universiti Malaya has joined a long list of Universities and companies that have selected Sophos Anti Virus to protect their computer systems."

Sophos will provide a licence to protect all the personal computers and servers used by students, faculty members and staff at Universiti Malaya. Sophos's partner, InfoTech Focus Sdn Bhd will also be responsible setting up a security policy in addition to providing support and training for university staff on safe computing practices.

"Sophos is committed to providing first-class anti-virus protection and support to our customers," said Dr Hruska. "Through our partner InfoTech Focus, we are confident that the university's network will be protected properly against computer viruses."

Deputy Vice Chancellor Associate Professor Dr Hamzah Abdul Rahman welcomed Sophos's commitment to improve the computing practices at the country's oldest tertiary institution. "Providing secure computers for our campus community is part of our charter. Safe computing practices are essential to ensure information integrity."

The Centre for Information Technology was established with the aim of catering to the needs of the campus community as well as upgrading the university's computing infrastructure for the future. Dr Hamzah, who is also the university's Chief Information Officer, said that the implementation of Sophos security applications was underway and the task is due to be completed in one year.
