Businesses brace themselves against Bagle barrage Happy New Year email message may disguise a malware attack

Experts at SophosLabs™, Sophos's global network of virus, spyware and spam analysis centers, have warned users about new viruses and Trojan horses related to the Bagle worm which have been spammed out to internet users. Sophos is advising users to ensure their anti-virus protection is up-to-date to protect against attacks.

Sophos has received reports of the W32/Bagle-EX worm and the Troj/BagleDl-AV, Troj/BagleDl-AW, Troj/BagleDl-AX, Troj/BagleDl-AY, Troj/BagleDl-AS, Troj/BagleDl-AT, and Troj/BagleDl-AU Trojan horses in the last 24 hours, issuing protection against all of them.

If the attached viral file is run, the malicious code can install further malware from the internet, giving access to remote hackers.

Many viral emails have been seen containing one of the following subject lines:

"It's important that businesses and home users ensure they are properly protected with automatically updated anti-virus software, and never open unsolicited email attachments," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos. "The criminals behind these viruses and Trojan horses don't stop just because it's the holiday season. They are counting on people returning in the New Year and not thinking before opening their email."

Sophos recommends companies protect their email with a consolidated solution to thwart the virus and spam threats and secure their desktops and servers with automatically updated anti-virus protection.
