Patching your operating system to protect against computer viruses
Up-to-date anti-virus software is essential in defending against computer viruses. So too is ensuring that systems are protected with the latest security patches to fix software vulnerabilities.
What to do
Vulnerabilities are often discovered before virus writers get the chance to exploit them, so Sophos strongly advises that patches are applied as soon as possible.
- Single users and administrators of small networks
You can download patches through Microsoft's Windows Update service. This is an automated service, requiring Internet Explorer 5 or higher, that will download and install any required patches.
If you are a modem or ISDN user and require a large number of patches, then you might wish to stagger the installation over a number of calls or schedule updates for cheaper calling times.
Alternatively, specific, critical patches can be downloaded from the main Microsoft website and installed manually.
- Administrators of large networks
You are best advised to collect all the required patches on CDs or a central server, enabling you to deploy easily to workstations.
In addition, every IT manager responsible for the security of Microsoft Windows networks should consider subscribing to the Microsoft Security Bulletin.
Although most viruses presently target Microsoft Windows systems, other platforms are susceptible. Vendor websites provide security bulletins and downloadable patches for other operating systems, such as Macintosh and Linux.
