Advisory: Issues with internet access to sophos.com now resolved

Update 8 September 2008

All residual access problems should now be resolved. As stated below, the root of the problem was resolved within minutes of it appearing last week. However, owing to the nature of DNS caching, it took some parts of the internet 48 hours or more to flush through. That process completed over the weekend.

Advisory (5 September 2008)

We are aware that since yesterday a minority of our customers have been experiencing intermittent issues with accessing some parts of our website.  In addition, some users may have experienced intermittent issues receiving anti-virus and anti-spam updates from Sophos.

This was because the sophos.com domain was not being resolved properly in some parts of the world as a result of an error made by an external domain management service provider.  This error has now been corrected by the provider, but because of the nature of the internet it takes some time for the fix to permeate throughout the entire internet.

SophosLabs has continued to issue updates against new malware and spam threats throughout the period of disruption, and customers whose updates were interrupted will be automatically updated to the very latest protection as soon as external DNS servers on the internet resolve themselves.

If you are experiencing a problem accessing the www.sophos.com website you may find browsing www.sophos.co.uk or language-specific sites such as www.sophos.de more successful.

We would like to reassure customers that the problems are not the result of a malicious attack, and that we are working with our service providers to ensure such an error does not occur again in future.

We will update this knowledgebase article with more information as appropriate.

Sophos apologises for any inconvenience.
